Okie Doke Popcorn, a cheesy delight.

Eaten as a child during my grandparents’ plight.

It’s crunchy, salty, and the perfect distraction

from screaming and shouting while avoiding attraction.

My sister and I would hide with our snacks,

Hiding from grandmother’s and uncles’ verbal attacks.

It’s safer to hide out of the way from the crowd,

it’ll help avoid mocking or accusations most loud.

But I know through it all, the torment and neglect,

Is that sweet, cheesy taste that I’ll never forget.

Now an adult on my own, I must no longer endure.

But still, Okie Doke popcorn tastes safe, tastes secure.
