“One True Love” by Malinda Lo to be a beautiful and excellently told tale. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I found it refreshing to read a love story about two women instead of the typical man and woman. I thought the descriptions in this story were excellently crafted, as I could practically see every scene with clarity in my head. Show don’t tell is a common piece of knowledge among the writing community, but I find it is incredibly hard to carry out because telling is so much easier. Though I suppose if writing were all sugar and cream everyone would do it. One of the things I appreciated about this story is its breaking of traditional gender norms. Without spoiling the plot, our main character Essylt has to make a concious choice to follow her "one true love", and break free from her chains. With mystery, prophecy, and fantasy elements, I would highly suggest this short story with a fairytale happy ending. Lo, Malinda. "One True Love." Lightspeed, Feb. 201,
