Damning Details

A basement full of junk

that piles every corner

hiding all my possessions

under a layer of sawdust and sand.

An endless existence toils away

as the project carries on,

its tempting to rush through

and avoid the damning details.

What’s one crooked frame

or missed insulation

if it’s all underneath

the wall.

Does the drywall need

to be seamlessly smooth

if it’s painted behind

pictures.

One layer of paint

is enough color spread

if the TV is hung

in front.

And yet

the critical eye

sees every shortcut taken.

So while it’s tempting

I cannot rush

through all the damning details.
